Class Description:
I love sewing scrap quilts! They give me an instant feeling of collaboration as I work with the supplies that I have at hand. I like to sew them by hand AND with a sewing machine, and I will share techniques for both in class. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you will be very successful in class without it, but you may also be inspired to get a sewing machine… My machine is a free hand-me-down Singer, and it works just fine. I’ll bet you can find a free old machine if you ask around too!
I like working with monochromatic and subtle colors, but these techniques will work with any color palette, and I talk through variables like color with students in class. Students will learn a ‘vignettes piecing’ method, so that the quilt can be made entirely with scraps. The class will focus on constructing a quilt top, and will not cover basting, quilting, or binding. (See my free YouTube basting video below)
Key concepts of the class include:
Composition and aesthetics
Getting it to lay flat
Piecing irregular bits of fabric to each other
Avoiding split seams
Avoiding making more scraps
Working with the problems created by your scraps (not against them)
Fast and efficient machine and hand piecing techniques
Tips for working with the supplies that you already own
Tips for body care and lifestyle so that you can fully enjoy scrap quilting
We’ll celebrate the environmentally friendly and ethical aspects of this work
This is a pre-recorded class. You will have access to 6 very short technique videos for knots and stitches, followed by a 100-minute lecture on scrap quilting with many embedded videos that I break down in detail. Then, you will experience a recording of a previous, live Zoom class with student questions and progress, a powerpoint, and lots of live demos. The class is 3 hours, followed by an hour of mingling with students and answering follow up questions. You might also enjoy sharing with your own small group by creating a google slideshow to share your work with each other, and you can share publicly with #hpscraps on Instagram.
