Can You be an Art Collector?
Yes! You probably already are:
You may have some 'outsider art' by kids. (I have some on my fridge!)
You may have some commercial art from Ikea, Target, or Thomas Kinkade (1 in 20 American homes do?)
You don't have to be rich to buy or care for art, just look at Herb and Dorothy! (This is a great documentary)
It's easy to hang a quilt on your wall, check out this 90-second video that I made.
Sometimes artists reach out to folks who own their art so it can be on loan in an exhibition. There's a special sentence that'll say: "On loan from the collection of So-and-So" Then you as the owner get to say yes or no to that opportunity.
If you want something special, you can request a commission. Right now through Gallery 224, I'm willing to make a quilt for you mapping a walk. Plus, you can always email me with commission ideas- look at this beautiful commission that I made earlier this year!
You can use a quilt from me too! Night Flight no. 3 is a 'nap quilt' in Italy now. How dreamy!! ☁️☁️☁️
Don't hang your quilts in direct sunlight. (That hurts paintings too)☀️
Don't store quilts in airtight plastic bags of bins, they can get mildew- museums use acid free cardboard boxes and tissue paper. Luckily, you need to collect a lot of quilts before you start boxing them up!
I'll be talking more about art collecting in Soft Bulk on Tuesday 11/9 at 4pm central with our special guest Roderick Kiracofe. He's collected so many quilts that he put them in his book, Unconventional and Unexpected. (I already pre-ordered my copy!) If you don’t already get our invites, register for Soft Bulk here.
Marjorie Childress is another quilt collector who I love to follow on insta. She spoke a couple years ago at QuiltCon when her collection was displayed, and wow!
I'm not wealthy, but I'm a quilt (and art) collector too! I paid hundreds of dollars for an antique Amish quilt and for a kantha quilt. It feels even better supporting living artists, and I love my Amanda Nadig and Zak Foster quilts that I own. My Amish quilt hangs next to my bed, and looking at it every day is truly a source of joy.
Quilts also provide natural sound proofing and insulation when on the wall. #StillFunctional #CantStopWontStop 😂
Living with art is a totally different experience than seeing it in a museum.
Living with handmade art is a totally different experience from mass produced art. You'll love it. ❤️
If you live in America and buy some art from me this holiday season, you won't have supply chain problems!
If you've made a handmade gift for someone, you can instantly transform them into an art collector! Basically all of my relatives and friends have my art in their homes. It's the best feeling to see it when I visit them. 🥰
